MacArthur & Wilson Award Nominations

 The International Biogeography Society

Announces

The MacArthur & Wilson Award

The Board of Directors of the International Biogeography Society (IBS) is pleased to open the competition for a new biennial Award. Named after R. H. MacArthur and E. O. Wilson, it honors their seminal contributions to biogeography. The award will recognize an individual for a notable, innovative contribution to biogeography. This award will be targeted at comparatively early career investigators and will have a guideline that recipients should have completed their PhD no more than 12 years before the deadline for nominations. The committee has some flexibility in regard to this criterion, to take account of differing life and career paths. A pair of collaborators might be considered providing both are eligible by this criterion.

The recipient should be prepared to offer a paper at the biennial meeting of the IBS and will be invited to publish a short article on their work in Frontiers of Biogeography. In return, their attendance at the meeting will be underwritten by the IBS.

The first award will be presented at the IBS biennial meeting in Miami, Florida, 10–12 January 2013.

Nominations should be sent to the Chair of the MacArthur & Wilson Award Sub-Committee (pdf’s are preferred; Robert.whittaker@ouce.ox.ac.uk) no later than Friday 23rd March, 2012. An individual can be nominated for a single paper or a ‘group of papers’ and it is anticipated that such a corpus of work will involve – in the spirit of MacArthur & Wilson’s famous monograph – scholarly collaborations with other co-workers.

Nominations should consist of a supporting cover letter of no more than 800 words, co-signed by two members of the IBS, plus a short cv of the nominee, plus pdfs of four key papers published by the nominee, at least two of which should have been published within the last three years.

Current members of this IBS sub-committee include: Pauline Ladiges, Christine Maggs, Albert Phillimore, Robert E. Ricklefs, Brett R. Riddle, Robert J. Whittaker (chair)

9th International Symposium on Aphids

9th International Symposium on Aphids
May 2013
Institute of Zoology, Chinese Academy of Sciences
Beijing, CHINA

The 9th International Symposium on Aphids will be held in May 2013 in Beijing, China. The 9ISA is organizing by the local committee on behalf of the Institute of Zoology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and the Entomological Society of China.

The main aims of this meeting are to bring together aphid colleagues from different countries, to facilitate discussion and communication of current knowledge by presenting main branches of aphid research, and to develop a better understanding of important biological problems using aphids as models as well as the evolutionary and ecological mechanisms underlying the adaptation of agricultural and forestry aphid pests.

Early Career Conference "Advances in Biogeography" & symposium on "Biodiversity conservation beyond protected areas"

---------------------------------
The International Biogeography Society is pleased to announce its upcoming Early Career Conference "Advances in Biogeography", 23-25 September 2011, at the University of Oxford, UK. A special opportunity exists for attendees to also join Oxford University's Biodiversity Institute Symposium on "Biodiversity conservation beyond protected areas" (21st - 22nd September) which immediately precedes the IBS Early Career Conference.

The Early Career Conference will focus on post-graduate students and those who have recently completed their doctorates (up to five years) interested in biogeography. The aim is to provide a forum in which early career biogeographers have an opportunity to present and discuss their work through formal presentations (oral and posters), and to encourage the formation of informal peer-to-peer networks. Evening mixer events will be attended by IBS board members and other senior biogeographers.

Registration is now OPEN for the meeting,

Workshop on Molecular Evolution and Molecular Phylogenetics

June 2010, Ziheng Yang, John Huelsenbeck, Laurent Excoffier, Masami Hasegawa, Dexing Zhang as well as Song Ge, again gave talks about the same topics, at IOZ.
-----
(May 2008) This week I attended a nice workshop on molecular evolution, molecular phylogenetics and population genetics which was held by Center for Computational and Evolutionary Biology (CCEB) of Institute of Zoology, Chinese Academy of Sciences. Several famous scientists in these field gave wonderful speeches and demos, they are Professor Ziheng Yang (the author of PAML) from University College London (UK), Professor John Huelsenbeck (the author of MrBayes) from UC Berkeley (USA), Professor Bruce Rannala from UC Davis (USA), Professor Laurent Excoffier (the author of Arlequin) from University of Bern (Switzerland), Professor Masami Hasegawa (one of the authors of HKY model) from Fudan University, China (Professor Hasegawa was at University of Tokyo before 2007). The workshop was organized by Professor Dexing Zhang at Institute of Zoology (IOZ), Chinese Academy of Sciences. Thanks for their hard work.

Go Sichuan!

I am deeply moved. Human is so brave and dedicative. Life is so strong and persistent. In spite of what a little kindness, just give it to people around you.

Go Sichuan!
